TPS Series III New Generation Low ESR A KYOCERA GROUP COMPANY Latest trends in circuit design of applications such as switch-mode power supplies, micro-processors, and digital circuits call for higher operating frequencies and smoother filtering. In order to function properly, components with low ESR, high capacitance and high reliability are required. The New Third generation TPS Low ESR series is based on the traditional MnO2 process that offers very low ESR levels previously only seen by other technologies. Further, continuous improvements in MnO2 technology has allowed reductions in the resistance of the capacitor electrodes in order to further reduce ESR levels. Traditional MnO2 technology guarantees excellent line and field performance, humidity stability and high electrical and thermal stress resistance. These features are very important for designs of power supplies, DC/DC converters and switching regulators. The following charts compare capacitance and ESR frequency behavior of traditional TPS part TPSD227K010R0100 with ESR level 100m and the new Series III part TPSD227K010R0050 with ESR specification 50m. TPS Series III can withstand higher ripple current load compare to the conventional TPS parts due to the lower ESR specification. The temperature behaviour of ESR for new TPS III capacitors, as compared to conventional low ESR tantalum and polymer tantalum capacitors is shown in the figure below. The conductivity of MnO2 increases as temperature increases. When used as the counter-electrode material in tantalum capacitors, this gives lower ESR as temperature increases. This is a significant difference to the ESR characteristic of polymer counter-electrode systems, which do not have increased conductivity. This is an important consideration in applications with higher operating temperature. The evaluation used a Linear Technology switching regulator (LTC1159) with a 10v input and 3.3v output rail at 3.3 load. The output ripple current with a single capacitor on the output was recorded at operating temperatures of 25oC and 85oC to evaluate the filtering abilities of conductive polymer, TPS and TPS III series. (The LT specification recommends two D case 100F 10v 100m capacitors).
